Responsible for directing and oversight of all finance activities for The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which includes the Department of Ophthalmology of the Miller School of Medicine, and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Center. This position acts as BPEI’s financial liaison to facility management in the communication, execution, and reporting of financial data. Oversight of budget preparation; Review and analyze department financial performance reports; Preparation and review of productivity benchmarks. Assist in preparation of miscellaneous business plans relating to hospital and departmental operations. Responsible for preparation and analysis BPEI dashboard. Responsibilities require close interaction with the physician and department managers regarding interpretation of financial data.

  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements and statistical data.
  • Assist department with performing economic evaluation of new programs/equipment
  • Perform trend analyses and volume projections
  • Develop strategic pricing and sensitivity analyses
  • Prepare budget for capital, new programs, and hospital/departmental operations
  • Initiate appropriate control to ensure compliance with operating and capital budget
  • Works with departmental management and patient care executives to implement financial plans and productivity benchmarks, and to monitor progress toward financial goals.
  • Direct budget preparation process for BPEI
  • Serve as BPEI representative on all Ophthalmology Finance & Technical Committees
  • Responsible for supervising the preparation and management level review of all BPEIs’ Medicare, Medicaid and AHCA financial reports.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all BPEI managers are provided training on all available financial systems and reports that are necessary to manage their departments
  • Responsible for monitoring and summarizing status of all financial targets for each BPEI department
  • Works with hospital & departmental accounting staff to prepare timely, monthly financial statements, report budget variances, develop and monitor cash flow projections
  • The position is assigned all onsite financial responsibility for the Hospital(s) (and acts as the hospital’s financial liaison to facility management in the communication, execution, and reporting of financial data.
  • In conjunction with the Hospital Division CFO is responsible for the oversight of applicable cash management systems, checks and balances, and internal controls.
  • Provides proactive, sound guidance regarding management of assets and investments, and financial trends within the facility to the hospital’s CEO and management.
  • Works with departmental management and patient care executives to implement financial plans and productivity benchmarks, and to monitor progress toward financial goals.
  • Is actively involved in the facilities management approaches, corporate performance, and the growth of a team oriented culture
  • In conjunction with the Hospital Division CFO and senior health system management, establishes a five-year strategic financial plan and participates in the hospitals’ strategic planning process.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of federal, state, and reimbursement payment methodologies including: contractual accounting, payment calculations, billing requirements and compliance issues.
  • Is responsible for development and maintenance of hospital decision support systems. Including cost accounting and accounts receivables valuation.
  • Maintains effective revenue cycle process to keep accounts receivable at acceptable levels in conjunction with Central Business Office leadership.
  • Monitors capital asset expenditures, prepares annual operating budgets with input and involvement with facility management.
  • Works with hospital accounting staff to prepare timely, monthly financial statements, report budget variances, develop and monitor cash flow projections, monitors performance of hospital contracts, and ensures hospital management fees are paid in accordance with contract terms.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to any and all additional facility departmental responsibility entrusted to this position by the respective facility CEO in agreement with the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Hospital Division CFO and/or the Chairman of BPEI



An experienced professional with a financial background and knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, exceptional analytical skills, excellent written and oral communication, good interpersonal skills and strong organizational and management abilities. In addition, must possess the ability to present business information to faculty and senior administrators in a manner easily understood by non-financial professionals. Must possess quantitative skills normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting plus CPA certificate or Master’s Degree in Finance, Business, Health Administration or related field.

  • The ideal candidate will have proven supervisory experience, aptitude in GAAP, and fund accounting, ability to work independently with minimum supervision, and have excellent computer and organizational skills.
  • Team player with strong communication and coordination skills to support the delivery of the Specialty Hospitals, the Hospital Division, and MSOM’s goals and objectives.
  • High personal standards of confidentiality, integrity, ethical behavior, fairness, and respect in dealing with others.
  • Bachelors degree in accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum qualifications include a Masters Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field. An accounting qualification CPA, CMA, or higher is preferred.
  • Sound experience and background in GAAP, internal accounting controls, research/grant accounting, and patient care regulatory environment
  • Minimum of seven years of healthcare financial management experience with emphasis on strong analytical skills required.
  • Advanced membership status in Healthcare Financial Management Association or the American College of Healthcare Executives preferred.
  • Experience managing professional staff.
